The Influence of Span in space frame Construction

space frame structures are influenced by various factors, including the fabrication and installation methods, span size, steel usage criteria, etc., which to some extent impact the choice of space frame forms.

1. For instance, if welding is used for nodes, a space frame composed of planar trusses is more convenient to fabricate than one composed of tetrahedra. Two-way orthogonal space frames are more convenient than two-way skewed space frames and three-way space frames. Tetrahedral space frames are more convenient than triangular space frames.

2. The installation method, such as whether integral lifting or hoisting is employed, or if segmented or block installation is chosen, or if high-altitude sliding is used, the selection of three types of orthogonal space frames—two-way orthogonal regular space frames, regular tetrahedral space frames, and regular tetrahedral space frames with voids—is more advantageous than choosing skewed space frames.

3. Calculations indicate that the size of the span has little influence on the selection of space frames. However, large-span space frames are generally used in significant constructions. In China, the most commonly used are two-way orthogonal regular space frames, two-way orthogonal skewed space frames, and three-way space frames, all composed of planar grid systems. These large-span space frames have abundant design and construction experience, making the technology more proficient. Three-way space frames, triangular tetrahedral space frames, hexagonal tetrahedral space frames, etc., are generally more complex in structure and require more steel, making them less suitable for small and medium spans.

4. The steel usage criterion is an important indicator for assessing the selection of space frames.
